World premiere trombone concerto 'Lied' by Jörgen and the Concertgebouw Orchestra
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra kicks off its new season with two special concerts in the Recommended Adventure series on 13 and 14 September. The program features works including Dutch composer Theo Verbey’s brand-new trombone concerto LIED, written for the orchestra’s very own principal trombonist Jörgen van Rijen. Verbey calls the new piece a ‘vocal work for trombone’. Indeed, the composition is built entirely around the ‘lyrical trombone’.
The concert opens with a work charged with a completely different atmosphere – Detlev Glanert’s Theatrum bestiarum, which explores the theme of man as animal. The programme concludes with Kurt Weill’s Second Symphony. The orchestra gave the world premiere of this work back in 1934. In short, a concert not to be missed.
