New album 'Mirrored in Time' out nowt!!

Despite its long history, the trombone has a very limited chamber music repertoire. Togeter with my amazing Concertgebouw Orchestra colleagues of the wonderful Alma Quartet we have tried to rectify this deficiency by initiating a fruitful collaboration between the trombone and the string quartet, the pinnacle of chamber music. 

Mirrored in Time thus presents a collection of powerful arrangements and attractive new works covering a wide range of styles. 

Framed by adaptations of contemporary pieces by Bryce Dessner and Chiel Meijering respectively, this recording presents five pairs of works. Each of these consists of an arrangement of an existing composition from bygone times mirrored by a recent or completely new work. John Dowland is echoed by Nico Muhly, Béla Bartók by Dimitar Bodurov, Gabriel Fauré by Jacob TV, Erik Satie by Florian Magnus Maier and Robert Schumann by Martijn Padding. 

With this programme, Mirrored in Time tells the story of what might have been - and how it is now.

Jörgen's latest SACD Fratres for BIS records is out now!

New versions of music by Arvo Pärt, combined with Jörgen's own arrangements of Bach harpsichord concerto's based on Italian barrock concerto's by Marcello and Vivaldi. All accompanied by Camerata RCO, a group of wonderful colleagues of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Jörgen will be giving a series of masterclasses in the spring of 2018: at three different high schools and universities in Texas, at the Royal Academy of Music in London and in Alicante, Portugal. See the calendar for more details.

On April 20, 2017 Jörgen van Rijen performed the world premiere of James MacMillan’s trombone concerto, with and commissioned by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and conducted by Ivan Fischer. The new work was very well received both by the audience and the Dutch press:

On May 18 and 19 Jörgen will participate in "BBT Celebrated", the events organized to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. He will give a masterclass and take part in a chamber music concert, with Mitsuko Uchida and with "co" price-winners of the Trust. More information

Horizon 4 is the fourth title in a series of CDs released by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra featuring contemporary music, including a live recording of Luciano Berio's trombone concerto SOLO, with Jörgen as soloist. It can be ordered here.

On March 2, 2012, Jörgen van Rijen will perform the world premiere of a new trombone concerto written for him by the well-known finish composer Kalevi Aho, with the The Hague Philharmonic and the young finnish conductor Sanntu Rouvali. The work has been composed with the support of the Borletti Buitoni Trust. Jörgen will then continue with the Finish premiere on March 29, 2012 with the Oulu Sinfonia conducted by Anna-Maria Helsing and this will be followed by the UK premiere on May 10, 2012, at the Barbican Centre in London, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alexander Vedernikov.
